Unit 1

What is Weather?

Definition: Weather is the daily state of the atmosphere, or air, in any given place.

Weather is everything from hot and cold, to rain and snow. Often, it is many things together! It can be raining, cloudy, and cold. That is just one of many examples of weather.

Weather Tools: How do They Work?

The main weather tools include thermometers, rain gauges, wind vanes.

Thermometers: Measure how HOT or COLD the environment is.

Rain Gauges: Measure how much rain has fallen.

Wind Vane: Tells the direction of the wind.

Thermometer Video

These Measure Temperature.

Thermometers have liquid in them that expands and rises when it gets hot, and lowers when it is cold. With the numbers on the thermometer, you can see how hot or cold it is.

Wind Vane Video

These Tell the Direction of the Wind.

Wind Vanes simply turn in the direction of the wind. With the labels on the wind vane, you can tell if the wind is going North, South, East, or West!

Rain Gauge Video

These Tell How Much Rain has Fallen.

Rain Gauges are simply containers that are labeled with liquid measurements, like an ounce, a cup, and more. When it rains, you can tell exactly how much it has rained if you look at how much water is in the rain gauge.

Types of Precipitation: (Rain, Hail, Sleet, Snow)

Precipitation Definition: Precipitation is anything that falls from the clouds in the sky. There are 4 main types:

  • Rain: Water droplets

  • Snow: Very small ice crystals

  • Sleet: Ice crystals and water mixed together

  • Hail: Frozen rain that can be as small as a droplet or as large as a baseball!
