Measurements
Unit 2
What is a Measurement?
A measurement can be the size, length, mass, weight, or volume of an object. Why is measurement so important? How do we use measurement in our everyday lives?
We use measurement to......
Cook food using recipes
Find our height and weight at the doctor's office
Build towers and buildings
Create drawings
Measure liquids
Can you think of any other things we can use measurements for?
What Tools Can We Use to Measure an Objects Length?
Length is the measure of how long an object is. Height is the measure of how tall an object is.
Tool: Ruler
A ruler measure objects up to 12 inches
12 inches = 1 foot
Therefore the length of a whole ruler is 1 foot
Tool: Yard Stick
A yard stick measures objects up to 36 inches
Since 12 inches = 1 foot, a yard stick can measure up to 3 feet
Tool: Tape Measure
Unlike rulers and yard sticks, tape measures are used to find the length of irregular shaped objects.
Tape measures are made out of flexible materials that allow it to be wrapped around objects.

There Are Two Sides of a Ruler: Inches & Centimeters
This ruler is measuring in inches. How do we find the length of this glue stick in inches?
Place one end of the object at the beginning of the ruler
Line the object up next to the ruler
This ruler is measuring in centimeters. How do we find the length of this glue stick in centimeters?
Place one end of the object at the beginning of the ruler
Line the object up next to the ruler
How long is the glue stick?
3 inches
How long is the pencil?
6 centimeters

What Happens if an Object's Measurement is in between Numbers?
Objects will not always measure perfectly to a whole number. Sometimes objects can be in between two different numbers. Let's check it out!
Quarter Inches
On the inches side of the ruler, we will be focusing on quarter inches
What is a quarter inch? A quarter inch is when we split 1 inch into 4 smaller pieces.
Our 4 smaller pieces will be 1/4, 2/4 or 1/2, and 3/4, and 1
1/10 Centimeters
On the centimeter side of the ruler, there will be 10 small tick marks in between whole number
Each of these tick marks are worth 0.1 centimeters

What Tools Can We Use to Measure Mass?
What is Mass?
Mass is the amount of matter (matter is any solid, liquid, or gas) in an object
Mass is the amount of "stuff" in an object
The more matter inside an object, the heavier it will feel
Mass can be measured in grams and kilograms
Triple Beam Balance
An instrument used to measure mass
How to Use a triple beam balance:
Place one object on the pan of the balance
You will see the pointer move down
Move your 100 gram slider right until the pointer drops below the zero
Move your 10 gram slider right until the pointer drops below the zero
Move your 1 gram slider right until the pointer drops below zero
Once the pointer is balanced, and pointing directly to zero, add up your total
To add up your total, add up the number on your first, second and third beam.
Your total represents the mass of the object in grams
Watch this video tutorial on how to use a triple beam balance.
Scale
Scales seen on your left are usually used in a science lab setting
An item is placed on the scale
The scale will show how much mass the object has in grams
What Tools can we use to Measure Liquids?
Measuring Cup
A measuring cup is most commonly used in a cooking setting
Liquids such as water are poured into the measuring cup
We can measure in cups, ounces, and pints
Graduated Cylinders
A graduated cylinder is most commonly used in a science lab
Liquids and chemicals were poured in the cylinder
Graduated cylinders measure the volume of liquids in a unit called milliliters
Millilitres is a measure of volume that is represented by (mL)
Beaker
A beaker is most commonly used in a science lab
Liquids and chemicals are poured in the beaker
Beakers measure the volume of liquids in unit called milliliters
Millilitres is a measure of volume that is represented by (mL)

What Tools can we Measure Temperature
Tool: Thermometer
A thermometer measures how hot or how cold an object is
Temperature is measured in either Fahrenheit or Celsius
Take a look at the picture. The thermometer reads 75 degrees Fahrenheit, but 24 degrees Celsius.
