Unit 1 : Native Americans!

This unit is all about Native Americans, the first ever humans to live on the continent of North America.

In the map to the left, different Native American groups lived in different parts, of what is now Mexico, the United States, Canada, and Alaska (USA).

Below, you will be able to spot many Native American groups in what is now the United States.

Below is modern day Canada. This is where you will find Arctic Natives, a common example being Eskimos.

Arctic Regions

In arctic regions, Native Americans made and lived in igloos similar to the ones shown above. They will often dress in thick clothing to stay warm.

Plains Regions

In the Plains regions, Native Americans built houses called Tipis (Pronounced Teepee). These houses were often made from the skin or leather of the buffalo that many middle American Natives hunted. They also had holes at the top that worked just like chimneys.

Swamp Regions

In swampy regions, such as those in southeast America, Native Americans built huts that looked like those in the picture above.

Traditions Today

Many Native American groups contribute to American culture through their own colorful celebrations, stories, values, and much more. To the left, you can see a ceremony with many Native Americans dressed traditionally and celebrating their rich culture.
