Punctuation

Lesson 4

Let's watch this super fun video on Punctuation!

Today we will be learning about 4 types of punctuation: periods, commas, question marks, and exclamation points.

Period

Periods are punctuation marks. They show that the sentence has ended. A sentence always begins with a capital letter and ends with a period. Periods are also used for shortened words (abbreviations).

Examples:

  • "The sky is beautiful today."

  • "The cow jumped over the moon."

  • "Tell Ms. Jones about your day."

  • Mister = Mr.

  • Miss = Ms.

Comma

A comma shows a slight pause or break between words and sentences. They are sometimes used in lists and are even used before coordinating conjunctions.

Examples:

  • "I need to buy milk, eggs, bread, and apples."

  • "Sam walked to the store, and she took the bus back home."

Question Mark

Question marks are used at the end of a sentence when asking a question. Replace the period at the end of the sentence with a question mark.

Examples:

  • "How are you?"

  • "When is Luke going to the movies?"

  • "What's your favorite animal?"

Exclamation Point

Exclamation points are also called exclamation marks. They are used to show excitement, happiness, surprise, anger, and extreme emotion.

Examples:

  • "Wow!"

  • "You scared me!"

  • "I'm so excited to go to the zoo!"
