What are synonyms?

Synonyms are words that have the same meaning! This means synonyms can easily replace each other in sentences!

Examples:
"I had a great birthday party last year!"

"I had a fantastic birthday party last year!"

Great and fantastic are synonyms and they both mean "above average"

Tall

Short

What are antonyms?

Antonyms are words that have opposite meanings! They can not replace one another.

Examples:

"Bill is tall."

"Linda is short."

Tall and short are antonyms because they are the opposite of one another.

Watch this video for more help on synonyms and antonyms!

Rhyming Words

Rhyming words have the same ending sound. For example, cat and hat are rhyming words because they both end in the -at sound. It's easier to find rhyming words when we say them out loud because not all rhyming words end in the same letters. Try saying each of the examples out loud!

Examples:

  • kid, did, slid

  • goat, moat, float

  • bird, heard, blurred

  • fist, twist, missed

  • bug, rug, tug

  • fox, box, rocks

Let's sing with Jack Hartmann! Practice rhyming by singing along!

It's important to know vocabulary so that you can make your sentences more interesting! Reading more also helps your vocabulary grow. In today's lesson, let's learn about different fruits, animals, and words. Pictures can help you understand and remember vocabulary!
