Measurements and Data

Unit 4

What is Volume?

Volume is how much space something takes up. We use volume and measurements all the time! Take a look at the picture to the right to see which volume measurements you use!

Measuring Equivalents

Just like fractions, measurements can also be converted into different versions of themselves! Take a look at the picture to the left to see how different volumes compare to each other!

Customary and Metric Units

You may know that the United States uses different units of measure than the rest of the world. In America, we use customary units, while the rest of the world uses metric units.

Length: Customary: Yards, Feet, Inches ... Metric: Meters and Centimeters

Weight and Mass: Customary: Pounds and Ounces ... Metric: Grams and Kilograms

Volume: Customary: Gallons, Quarts, Pints, Ounces ... Metric: Milliliters and Liters

Metric Unit Conversions

With metric units, you can convert them into each other using their names! For example, centimeter has the word "centi" in it, which means 1/100. This means that there are 100 centimeters in 1 meter. Milliliter has the word "milli" which means 1/1000, so we know that there are 1000 milliliters in a liter. Similarly, kilogram has the word "kilo" in it, which means 1000. This means that there are 1000 grams in a kilogram.

Play the video and game to learn more about customary and metric units!

Time

Time can also be measured using units! We normally use hours, minutes, and seconds to measure the amount of time that passes or must pass to reach a certain event.

There are 60 minutes in an hour and 60 seconds in a minute. Using this knowledge, you can convert between them and solve problems using all the units!

Let's Try It Out!

Try the word problems below and see if you can find the answers! Then use the dropdown arrow to check if you are right!

Amira was 105 cm tall last year. She is now 117 cm tall. How many inches did she grow? Is she taller or shorter than a meter?

Amira grew 12 cm (117 - 105 = 12) and she is taller than 1 meter (There are 100 cm in a meter and both 105 and 117 are greater than 100).

It normally takes 15 minutes for Rahima to bike to school but on Monday, there was a 13 minute delay. How long did it take her to bike to school on Monday?

It takes Rahima 28 minutes to bike to school (15 + 13 = 28).

Kidus got to his friend's birthday party at 12:30 pm. Dawit arrived 45 minutes after Kidus. When did Dawit arrive?

Dawit arrived at 1:15 pm. (12:30 + 00:45 = 1:00 + 00:15 = 1:15).

Interpreting Graphs and Data

What is Data?

A datum (plural: data) is any information that can be analyzed to reach a conclusion. Much of the time, data is numerical and can be displayed on a graph. A graph is a visual of all the data.

In the graph to the right, people were asked to share their favorite fruit. The straight line with all the numbers on the left shows how many people selected each fruit, and the labels on the right show which type of fruit the people picked.

Can you read the graph? Which fruit is most popular? You can figure this out by comparing the lengths of each column/bar. The blueberry column is the longest so it is the most popular fruit!

Try the questions below for a challenge! Then, use the drop down arrow to see if you were right!

Which fruit is the least popular?

Grapes are the least popular.

How many people picked "Apples"?

35 people picked apples.

Which to fruits had the closest number of people pick them?

Both Apples and Oranges as well as Bananas and Grapes are only apart by 5 people.
