Practice Questions

Try a few of these before you do the chapter challenge. Refresh your memory!

Convert 670 to tens. How many tens are there?

The answer would be 67 tens. Each hundred has 10 tens. There are six hundreds because there is a 6 in the hundreds place. 6 x 10= 60. There is also 70, which is 7 tens. This means there are a total of 67 tens.

What is the expanded form of 24,782- 20,000 + 4,000 + 700 + 80 + 2?

The expanded form of 4782 is 20,000+ 4000+ 700+ 80+ 2. Again, expanded form shows the value of each digit. In this number, 2 is in the ten thousands place 4 is in the thousands place, 7 is in the hundreds place, 8 is in the tens place, and 2 is in the ones place.

What is 7,808 rounded to the nearest hundred?

7,808 rounded to the nearest hundred is 7,800. Here we look at the tens place to determine whether we round up or down. Because the tens place has a 0, we round it down. Remember the rule: 4 or less, let it rest, 5 or more, raise the score. When asked to round to a certain place value (like the hundreds place), you look at the place value before it (the tens). 7808 rounded to the nearest hundred is 7,800.
