Light and Sound

Unit 2

Light

What is Light?

Light is a form of energy that enables us to see all the things around us. The main source of light on the earth is the sun. Let helps us see and the light of the Sun keeps everything on Earth alive!

Videos Explaining Light

What are some examples of light?

Video on Sources of Light

Artificial (Man-made) Light

Man-made light is any light that is not natural. This includes light bulbs that you find in your house, all the way to glow sticks you can get from the store.

Natural Light

Examples of natural light, or light that is not created by a human, include fire, the sun, the northern lights, and even some animals that can glow, like fireflies!

The Sun is the Earth's largest and most important source of light. It helps plants live and keeps the Earth warm.

Sound

What is Sound?

Sounds come from vibrations (movement) in the very small particles of the air that eventually reach a person's or animal's ear.

Videos explaining Sound as Vibration

Drum Vibrating

As you see above, the drum (in slow-motion) is vibrating up and down after being hit by the stick. The vibrating drum makes the air around it vibrate, and ultimately reaches your ears where you hear the drum.

Tuning Fork Vibrating

The tuning fork is another prefect example of sound and how it is made with vibration. In super slow motion (so slow the water is barely falling!) you can see the tuning fork moving back and forth extremely fast. Watch the video to hear the SOUND!
