Practice Problems!

Do a few of these before taking your chapter challenge! Refresh your memory!

How many quarts are in 3 gallons?

There are 12 quarts in 3 gallons. Remember, there are 4 quarts in each gallon! If there are 3 gallons with 4 quarts in each, you have to do 3x4. This is 12 quarts!

A rectangle has one side length that is 12ft and one side length that is 6ft. What is the perimeter and area of this rectangle?

The perimeter is 36ft and the area is 72ft squared. To find perimeter, you have to add up all of the side lengths. Because this is a rectangle, two sides have a length of 12ft and two sides have a length of 6ft To find the perimeter, you have to add 6ft + 6ft + 12ft + 12ft. This tells you that the perimeter is 36ft. To find the area, you have to multiply one side length by another side length. You have to do 6ft x 12ft. This tells you that the area is 72ft squared.

You have $21.75 in your pocket. You want to buy 3 books that are each $5.50. Can you afford it? If so, how much money do you have left?

If you are buying 3 books that are $5.50 each, you have to do 5.50 x 3. This is $16.50. So yes, you can afford this! You had $21.75, and you have spent $16.50. To figure out how much money you have left, you have to do 21.75 - 16.50. Once you do this you see that you have $5.25 left.

Observation Station

Let's observe some more examples!

A football field is 100 yards long. How long is it in feet?

A football field is 300 feet long. Each yard is 3 feet.

What is the perimeter and area of this shape?

The perimeter is 34ft. To find the perimeter, you add up the lengths of all four sides. You add 8 + 8 + 9 + 9 which gives you 34. This means that the perimeter is 34ft.

The area is 72ft sq. To find the area, you have to multiply the two side lengths. You have to multiply 8 x 9 to find the area which gives you 72. Area is "squared". So the answer is 72ft squared.

How many quarts are there in six gallons?

There are 24 quarts in six gallons. Each gallon has 4 quarts and there are 6 gallons. 6 x 4 = 24.
