Civic Understandings

Unit 3

Positive Character Traits!

Fairness and Equality

All people, regardless of race or gender are created equal, and should be treated fairly. African Americans such as George Washington Carver and Ruby Bridges fought against racism in the South. They fought so African Americans and all other minorities would be treated fairly today. Treat everyone fairly and respectfully!

Respect and Tolerance

It is very important to treat everyone with respect. Treating your family, friends, classmates, and teachers with respect is the right thing to do and you should always do it. You should remain respectful and tolerant of others regardless of race, religion, or gender.

Also, you need to respect the environment! Our Earth is beautiful and it needs to be protected. This means you should not litter, keep the Earth clean, and fight for it! Like Theodore Roosevelt spend time admiring and respecting the environment.

Courage and Commitment

In the past, people like Lewis, Clark, Sacagawea, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson showed incredible determination to achieve their success. Unlike some of the things they did, this is something that is incredibly important to do. When you care about something, you have to persist and work to achieve your goals! Be persistent and determined!

Patriotism

America

Patriotism is having love for your country!

America is definitely not perfect. There are some very bad things in our country like racism. Again, it is necessary that you respect and treat everyone fairly! Still, America is beautiful and we should love our homeland and try to fix its flaws!

Throughout history there have been patriotic songs like America (My Country ‘Tis of Thee) and America the Beautiful. These songs show the beauty of this country.

No matter what ethnicity, race, or nationality you are, America welcomes everyone!

Listen to these songs!

How do they make you feel about America?

Does the music make you happy to be an American? Being happy or proud of your country is called patriotism!
