All about British Colonial America


In the map to the left, you can see all 13 colonies of Great Britain in what is now the United States. You will learn that many colonists came to the United States for the following two reasons:

  • Religious Freedom

  • A New life of Opportunity for Making Money and Farming

The Colonies were still a part of Great Britain.

The colonies gave many people of Great Britain a new life of religious freedom and opportunity to farm. It was the perfect place to start a new life.

However, many colonists fell ill, did not have enough food, or engaged in the evil practice of slaves. Life was not perfect.

Break it Up!

The Colonies are easier to understand when split into three regions!

New England, Middle, and Southern Colonies

New England Colonies

The New England Colonies were:

  • Maine

  • Vermont

  • New Hampshire

  • Massachusetts

  • Connecticut

  • Rhode Island

Middle Atlantic Colonies

The Mid-Atlantic Colonies were:

  • New York

  • New Jersey

  • Delaware

  • Pennsylvania

The Middle Colonies were also called the "bread basket" of the colonies because they produced A LOT of grain!

Southern Colonies

The Southern Colonies were:

  • Maryland

  • Virginia

  • North Carolina

  • Georgia

Southern Colonies grew cash crops!

Each Region had Different Crops, Education, and Religion

Because of the different climates and geographical features o the different colonies, each colony had to farm differently, and many different people took part in education and Christianity differently.
